Teaching Practice

Introduction

In this paper, I have to discuss my experience of teaching; also, I have to describe what teaching strategies I used while teaching, observing and assessing students. I taught mathematics and science to class 1.

Earlier, I thought that teaching is the most difficult job one could ever play. It is the most mature job since a teacher is accountable for the future of students. I never thought to opt this profession as I did not consider myself that much responsible to teach students. I thought that describing something to students in a way that it is accurately communicated is a difficult thing. I also thought that if a student is not much intelligent, how I would make him clear with what I want him to learn. However, after experiencing this, I can say that it is the most exciting job, and when you convey your message clearly, that is the most exciting moment for a teacher. I taught math, which is considered the most difficult subject and explaining math to non-intelligent students is a tiring job. While teaching, I found that my students possess different amounts of intelligence and thus their answers were diverse, ranging from abstract and complex ones to obvious ones too. Such diverse answers made me realize their disparate interpretations that enabled me to pay more attention to others in conversations (realizing the validity of other's statements if looked from a different perspective). Even in my studies, I started looking from various angles at any problem that confronted me, in the hope of finding clues to its solution.

I spent three weeks in a primary school, observing, planning and teaching lessons, marking work, talking with teachers and working with small groups of pupils. This has given me a valuable insight into a number of important issues related to teaching. I feel that what we teach in mathematics and science should be of some use to all pupils. Einstein said, “Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty”. A lesson should be equipping the pupils with useful skills they can take into later life. Since, I was teaching class 1 students, the lessons were not that difficult. However, students of class 1 took the lessons differently. Some picked instantly, while others found it difficult to pick math questions immediately and needed extra attention and time.

Teaching Strategies

The process of learning and teaching of mathematics and science in the schools, especially in primary education has become, in recent years, a task fundamental in all education systems. There is probably no society whose structure lacks educational curricula related to mathematics and science education.

The teachers of mathematics and other areas of scientific knowledge are often compared to changing demands and innovative teaching, which requires more attention from people who are dedicated to research in the field of didactics mathematics and science and, especially, the development of learning units for the treatment of a variety of topics within ...
