Abstract
This paper is aimed to throw light on the functioning of manual transmissions in general, and T5 manual transmissions in particular. Explicit explanation is provided to elaborate the phenomenal operation of T5 manual transmission with illustrious diagrams that make it even comprehensive to understand. Furthermore, the relation of power flow to the various gears of the automobile is defined giving concrete justifications.
Introduction
All transmissions, work on some basic principles, including; transmission of power from the engine applied to drive wheels when required, disconnecting the running engine from the drive wheels when the gears change or when the vehicle is immobile, reversing the direction of power flow when the vehicle needs a back up and multiplying the torque of the engine when required.
The TREMEC T-5 is a 5-speed manual transmission for extended engine vehicle. It is composed of one overdrive gear, light-weight aluminum housing, and is adaptable for four wheel drive use. It is manufactured by Transmission Technologies Corporation, under the TREMEC brand name.
Operation and Power Flow of a T5 Manual Transmission
As it is evident from the definition, the T5 manual transmission transmits power from the engine to the driving wheels; it does not actually produce power but it makes power usable by driving it into a number of steps.
Operation
The transmission is equipped with different gears, each having equipped with several gears, each having a ratio to create optimal power flow from the engine to the power drive of the automobile. Automobiles with engines, having a narrow power band for example a diesel in an over the road semi-trailer, will have multiple gears. The first gear is the lowest gear or highest ratio providing the most mechanical advantage. All forward gears on manual transmission are ...
