Introduction of NYCLU

The issue of civil rights and civil liberties is not unique and new-fangled in United States. It is the issue that is burgeoning over the period of time. There are scores of organizations and institutes that are working for this issue. One of the most eminent and prolific organizations that is working for the civil rights and civil liberties is New York Civil Liberties Union.

The institute of New York Civil Liberties Union is considered as the one of the foremost and most important defenders of the civil rights and civil liberties of the nation. It is a not for profit organization. This institute was founded in the year 1951 as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union. NYCLU has eight chapters and various regional offices. Approximately 50,000 people are associated with this organization as its members. The mission with which this organization works is to provide protection and defend the principles and values that are the part of the Bill of Rights, New York Constitution and U.S. constitution. The issues for which NYCLU fights and makes efforts include freedom of speech, freedom of religion, privacy rights and equality. There s immense amount of work that is done by NYCLU in relation to these mentioned ideas, mission and principles (nyclu.org, pp. A-1).

SWOT of NYCLU

SWOT analysis can be described as a tool that lends a hand in the evaluation of the strength, weakness of the organization and the threats and opportunities that are posed by the external environment to the organization. It is this method as a result of which organizations can devise future strategies by getting insights from the past (Lawrence, pp. 4).

The following part of the paper presents the SWOT analysis of New York Civil Liberties Union. This SWOT analysis would aid the institute in devising strategies to carry out its operations and its fight to relieve the civil rights and civil liberties.

Strengths

Strengths are the positive points and power of the organization that provide it with an edge in comparison to others in the same field and industry (Ricky, pp. 68). This part discusses the strengths of NYCLU.

The first and the most important factor that provides an edge to this institute is that its stability in the field. NYCLU is an oldest organization that is working for the protection and prevalence of the civil rights and civil liberties. This organization was formed at a time where there was a surge of civil liberties. NYLCU came into being when the McCarthyism was on, when there was the trend of blacklisting and when the loyalty oaths were the norms. It was the time when the government used to oversee the task of censorship for books and magazine and when the act of abortion was considered as a crime.
