SUSTAINABLE SKYLINES

Sustainable Skylines

Air pollution has increased in UAE and especially in the larger cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. One of the sources is the wind blown sand since major part of these cities was and is a desert. This is a major problem and a common occurrence during the winter season. However it would have been a minor problem if this was the only pollutant in this region. The air pollution has increased mainly due to the sudden construction craze in Dubai and the increasing traffic. It is a real tragedy to have such poor quality air in a place like Dubai where lots of developments are made. A city like Dubai that is building many tall and fancy towers, creating one of the most amazing skylines in the world, man-made islands, largest shopping malls etc. will probably see this century, however, it's a tragedy that people may not be able to make out the skyline except on exceptional days.

Dubai is the GCC's fastest growing economies and while there is an increase in the incomes and improvement in the health indicators of the country its growth has not been totally benign. Environmental pollution is damaging human health, water, air, agriculture and ultimately the whole economy.

Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing humanity today. It causes global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, and other potentially disastrous processes. Air, water, and soil-all harmed by pollution-are necessary to the survival of all living things. Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which people pollute their surroundings. People dirty the air with gases and smoke, poison the water with chemicals and other substances, and damage the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. People also pollute their surroundings in various other ways. For example, they ruin natural beauty by scattering rubbish and litter on the land and in the water. They operate machines and motor vehicles and fill the air with disturbing noise. Nearly everyone causes environmental pollution in some way. All parts of the environment are closely related to one another. Because of these close relationships, a kind of pollution that chiefly harms one part of the environment may also affect others. For example air pollution harms the air. But rain washes pollutants out of the air and deposits them on the land and in bodies of water.

Pollution is also cause by factors like acid rain. It has become an increasingly serious problem. This pollutant is formed when moisture in the air combines with nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide released by factories and by power plants that burn coal or oil. The acid pollutes lake and streams, resulting in the death of fish and the contamination of drinking water. This acid also harms the crops and reduces the fertility of the soil. Many environmental pollution problems are a result of the rapid advances in technology that have been made. Technological advances in agriculture, industry, and transportation have greatly improved our way ...
