CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Outline of the Study

Businesses today have gone well beyond the simple process of selling and buying of a good or process between two people. Simply put, a business transaction is one where there is an exchange of goods or services for cash, between two people. One is the seller and the other is the buyer. Today, businesses have advanced and transformed into multinational organizations that operate jointly from different countries and plan their activities well in advance. Today, a business transaction involves forecasting, planning, execution and even feedback.

Supply chain management is the system that most companies adopt (especially manufacturing concerns) to ensure that their transactions are always executed smoothly and efficiently. Due to the extreme increase in competition and the availability of substitute goods and services, it is very important for a business to stay on its toes and be proactive all the time. Reactive approaches to business are outdated and inefficient. They do not work anymore. To be on the top, a business has to act and react in the blink of an eye. Supply chain management is the system where companies plan the flow of their inputs and their outputs. It is the efficient and ideal utilization of the resources being applied towards the production of a product in a way that minimizes the gap between demand and supply to a minimum. Supply chain management is the process that businesses adopt to ensure that minimum costs are incurred and maximum productivity and sales are achieved. By properly monitoring and planning the inflows of a business, a company can ensure low wastage and by monitoring the outflow, a company can ensure higher sales and efficiency (Atkin, B. et al, 1995, pp205).

Since the time man discovered how to build structures, construction has been a key industry of the globe. It is an increasingly evolving industry where new methods and techniques are being discovered daily. If we look at history we can easily identify changes in construction techniques and methods. The Stone Age to the era of the pyramids to the glory of Rome and modern day wonders like the Burj Khalifa, all indicate the level of evolution that construction has witnessed over time. In constructing a structure, a lot of raw material is used. Different processes take place and then these processes align together to form a structure. To ensure that a construction project gets completed on time and with minimum wastage, it is necessary to implement a proper supply chain management program that ensures timely delivery and replenishment of raw materials and other supplies. The paper studies the level of impact that proper supply chain management has on the construction industry.
