ABSTRACT
Research shows there are many young people and children who are looked after in UK. Suicide is considered as the main cause of death in young people across the world and is considered as the second most after death. The study aim is to determine suicideal ideation and parasuicide in looked after young people in Scotland and what are the best practices used for the protection of young people. It is also necessary to determine the current attempts which are being used in this regard in order to reduce the risk of suicide among young people. The study is based on secondary research methodology. The study will conduct an investigation by using government articles journals, research papers and previous studies conducted by authors relevant to the topic. This type of research can be described as to access already available data which will be analyzed and the findings will be provided in this regard. The study also provides the suicide prevention programs and interventions which should be used in future.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Research shows that, across UK, there are many young people and children who are looked after. Furthermore, it is noted that in Wales and England looked after children in most cases are similar with children who are looked after young people in Scotland, but there some differences which exist. Over last seven years, suicidal behaviour and suicide has been recognized as an important issue for public health policy and practice in Scotland. Suicide prevention activities are at large for reducing the high rate of suicide (15 per 100,000 as compared to 8.5 in England and Wales) (Scottish Government, 2010). In order to cater such high rate the Scottish Government reviewed the risk and protective factors of suicidal behaviour and suicide (Scottish Government, 2010).
Suicidal behaviour consists of two overlapping phenomena. First, there are individuals intentionally kill themselves (suicide) and other who survive form a suicide attempt (attempted suicide). In comparison there are individuals who harm themselves without the intention to die known as parasuicide. Parasuicide and deliberate self harm cases may lead to fatal outcomes and result in high probability to commit suicide (Madge et al, 2008).
