Suicide

Introduction

The issue of suicide has now become a rising concern for people living any part of this world. There is no doubt about the fact that the trend of suicide reflects behavioral problems in an individual who commits suicide (Blauner, 2003). However, there are various contributing factors behind any behavioral problem in an individual who attempts or commits suicide. In fact, suicide can be explained as an act of termination one's life voluntarily. In other words, an individual possess certain depressive feelings that repel him towards a state where he or she attempts to kill him or herself. It is also essential to discuss that sometimes a depressed person plans a suicide in advance (Joiner, 2007). However, many times the suicide attempts happen impulsively, in a moment of deep despair. This means, situations like breakup of a romantic relationship, a big fight with a parent, an unintended pregnancy, be rejected or set aside by another person or being abused can make one feel desperately upset.

No doubt, there are different types of people among whom some attempt suicide, while others do not want to die. It would be fair to say that people use suicide attempts as a way of expressing deep emotional pain. They are not able to express how they feel, so they attempt suicide seems the only way to convey that message (Joiner, 2007). Unfortunately, even when a suicide attempt is just a way to shout for help and the person does not want to die, there is no way to control it. Many people who basically would not take themselves end up dead or critically ill. This paper aims to discuss the issue of suicide along with the laws and policies associated with it.

Discussion

It can be seen that no country is saved from the issue of suicide as thousands of people commit suicide worldwide. In fact, younger people seem more fragile to suicide where males are particularly affected. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2000, nearly 1 million people committed suicide and 10 to 20 times more have attempted suicide in the world (Kumar & Mandal, 2010). This represents an average of one death every 40 seconds and one attempt every 3 seconds. In all countries, suicide is a leading cause of death among persons 15 to 35 years. Until recently, suicide was prevalent among the elderly but it is now prevalent among younger people in many third world and western countries. The comparative analysis of the number of suicides by age also brings a new look. However, information on the number of suicides reveals a different picture of the world where 57% of suicides are committed by persons aged 15 to 44 years (Kumar & Mandal, 2010). This represents a significant change in circumstances since 1950. This shift in the predominance of the number of suicides by age group goes against demographic changes as the older population is increasing over the last 50 years.
