Subsidized Housing

Introduction

The aim and objective of this assignment is to explain the concept of subsidized housing and the sections including in it such as, section 8 vouchers, MRVP vouchers, public housing and supportive housing.

Subsidized Housing

Subsidized housing is referred to the accommodation which is provided by government for the people of low and moderate income groups. There are various forms of subsidized housing schemes such as, non-profit housing, direct housing subsidies, public housing and private sector housing. Subsidized housing comprises all sorts of housing facilities where the provincial government provides subsidy to the people who cannot afford to buy houses. In some cases, the government also doles out rent assistance to the families who hardly earns for a livelihood. The houses in the subsidized housing plan provide shelter to senior citizens, people with disabilities and people from low income groups.

Section 8 vouchers

The section 8 of the Housing Act of 1937 is a legal and constitutional provision for the setting up of subsidized houses. It has been amended several times to provide safeguard and assistance to the homeless people. The section 8 of the housing act authorizes the government to make payment of rental housing facilities to the private landlords for more than 3.1 million low-income households. There are many other programs which are included in the section 8 such as, Housing Choice Voucher program, through which rent and utilities payments are disbursed for more 2.1 million households. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is responsible for implementing this section with input from the provincial government. Their role is to maintain transparency and fairness in the allotment of subsidized houses to the deserving applicants.
