Introduction

The 21st-century landscape is characterized by increasing globalization and a very accelerating change. In the simplest terms, a social network is a set of people with a set of connections representing the existence of a relationship, or lack of relationship, between each pair of people. The study of social networks has a long interdisciplinary history rooted in the fields of anthropology, psychology, sociology, and mathematics. Interest in social networks has exploded recently in the fields of leadership development, business, economics, and computer science, to name just a few.

In the 1990s, when consumer World Wide Web technologies were still being developed, analysts spoke of the web's potential as a social connector, creating communities and bringing people together in ways never before thought possible. These idealistic conversations made their trial run with Classmates.com, established in 1995 to reunite long-lost high school friends online. After that, a handful of networking sites spun off the Classmates. Com concept, but none took off in the ways that craigslist. Among these sites, craigslist has grown substantially, serving primarily as an online marketplace based in major cities around the United States and the world. While it fits the networking website definition broadly with its role as social connector, it does not allow its users to create individual profiles.

If there is a phenomenon that has attracted attention in the Internet in recent times, and already beginning to show economic benefit to its creators, it is the emergence of the social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr and many more.

Facebook

It is currently the most widely used worldwide. More than 500 million users have registered to date. Its introduction in current society is of such magnitude that many companies have their own profile, through which, they are able to sell their services and products worldwide. The web interface is fully translated and has its own chat.

MySpace

It is one of the most traditional social networks and has a large number of users registered (it is estimated that over 180 million to date). The interface, fully translated, is very easy to use, so anyone who is discharged in the service in less than five minutes is capable of handling it perfectly. It has sections of photographs, videos and music specifically.

Twitter

It may be considered as a social network, but , the service actually provides its users with micro blogging i.e. users can publish short text messages called tweets of up to 140 characters. Users can create those messages from the website, third party applications and even using SMS messages from their mobiles. There are a lot of applications on the web that allow the customization of personal staff to delivery and reception of messages.

HI5

It is one of the biggest social networks in Latin America. Globally, it has a sum of 56 million visitors. The site is available in English and over a dozen languages ?.
