Introduction to the Chosen Publication

This essay will review an article in criminology with respect to the methodological approaches used in the publication. For this purpose, the article chosen will be Unnever's “Crime and coercion: A test of core theoretical propositions”, published in the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency in the year 2004. The article relates to the control of substance abuse and monitoring behaviors of adolescents in this respect. Substance implies use of drugs, narcotics, methamphetamine and other potential doses that help disengage people from their current existence or their situation at present, and them towards a mild shutdown for the brain. The paper comprises an analysis of what, where and how attempts have been made to put substance abuse (SA) happenings to a halt (Unnever, 2004, pp. 244-268).

Study's Research Problem and Research Questions

The research problem of the study was based on studying the effects of substance abuse on the behaviors of adolescents and their criminal intentions that result from such practices.

Methodological approaches used

The article discusses the perceived effects of substance abuse on criminal motivations of adolescents. This article presents a review of the literature into the issues and impacts of substance abuse on health and cognitive abilities of the working individual. The methodology used in this study was tape-recorded versions of a convenience samples in which six adolescents were interviewed. These people attributed various factors to the positive or negative effects of substance abuse. A content analysis approach was utilized in this research based study. The researcher needs to know to analyze the symbolic material or "qualitative". Much of modern research is done by sorting tasks, sort, quantify and interpret the obvious product of the behavior of individuals or groups. The discussion of the study shows that there are more ills of working in unsocial hours than good. The disadvantages in this case, clearly outweigh the advantages. People were observed to be willing to go for substance abuse due to lack of interest in social activities and other, criminal motivations (Newburn, 2009, pp. 88-90).

Research methods Used

Research methodology serves the most important purpose in the course of a research. Reliable data collection is only possible if the researcher has employed a systematic methodology with justified approaches that addresses the key concerns of data collection and results in meaningful information (Wentland, 1993, pp. 40-87). There are different approaches to selecting and applying data for a good research project, which includes quantitative and qualitative approaches. It totally depends on the author to choose either route or both if applicable to his research objectives.

Since it included the analysis of primary data in its study, it also collected the previously held researches in the sense that previous surveys and investigation on the scientific methodology is analyzed duly (Eisner & Peshkin, 1990, pp. 47-52).
