Student-Centered Learning Plan for Teenage Sex Education
Student-Centered Learning Plan for Teenage Sex Education
Introduction
This plan will use the student-centered technique for learning and would focus on teenage sex education. Since our society is faced with a number of issues and myths about sex, especially among teenagers, the plan would look to educate the class on the misconceptions and question they have regarding the subject. The plan would look to engage students with one another by sharing their experiences, personal or non-personal. By engaging the students, the objective of providing relevant and valid information about the issue would be achieved. The goal is to extract the ideas and beliefs that students have and try and instill facts they may be previously unknown (Harvey & Goudvis, 2007).
Objectives and Goals of the Plan
The objectives of the plan include the following;
Dispel myths among teenagers about sex
Provision information regarding the hazards and diseases (sexually transmitted diseases)
Provide information as to how can sex be made safer
How to avoid teenage pregnancy
What age should a person engage in sexual activities?
Goals of the plan include the following points;
Increasing awareness among teenagers regarding the perils associated
Reducing the probability of teenage pregnancy among females
Creating understanding as to the implications and consequences of unsafe sex
The rationale behind the plan is to change the manner in which teenagers perceive information over the issue. The plan is based on the fact that an increasing number of teenagers are faced with the dilemma of having invalid and false information. They are often left uncertain as to who to trust. A significant percentage of teenagers resort to their peers and the internet when they wish to sought information. The process of learning, in this case, does not involve an authority that would guide them over the subject. This leads to the importance of having a student-centered plan that would be informative for the students about the issue and dismiss whatever pre-conceived notions that students may have. Such a plan would help teenagers in learning through personal experiences and those of the others (Zevin, 2000).
Considerations
The plan would include examples of actual teenagers that had, unfortunately, experienced the consequences of unsafe sex. The plan would ensure confidentiality of the subject in discussion as it could have an adverse impact on the individuals. By presenting real-life examples, teenagers would be able to learn how the issue can affect females (generally in the form of pregnancy) and males (psychological pressures of dealing with pregnancy of their partner). The plan would also include viewpoints of physicians discussing the issue and threat of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) among teenagers. Student would be able to gain first account and learning through physicians' advice. The plan would also cover the issue of avoiding pregnancy and what methods of contraception should one use in case of any mishap. Students would also be able to discuss what preventive measures that should take such as personal hygiene in relation to sexual education (Zevin, 2000).
