Chapter 1 - Introduction

Introduction

The role of school is essentially clear because it is clear and universally accepted as an institution that instills the basics of life into the generation that is to constitute the future of society (Lavy &Bilbo, 2009; Levine & Munsch, 2011). In this regard, the relevance of schooling is undeniable (Bauer, 2006; Bergin & Bergin, 2012). However, studies have now begun to examine the relationship between schooling and problematic adolescent behavior more closely; mainly in an attempt to better understand ways through which schooling can be made more effective (Eyal, 2007; Jongsma, 2010). This paper will attempt to contribute to the body of research that pertains to student school bonding and adolescent problem behavior (Coviello, 2005; Darity, 2008). The paper will be divided into five chapters; each of which will serve a specific purpose and function as an integral component to the paper (Dishion & Kavanagh, 2003; Durán-Narucki, 2008). The first section will constitute the statement of the problem, the research questions and the definitions of key terms that the research will utilize and focus upon. The second section will constitute a literature review that will be meant to elaborate on the key sub-topics pertaining to the subject of the research. The third section will assist in defining the research methodology and an explanation of the data gathering techniques along with an elaboration of the methods that will be utilized to handle and process the collected data for information. The fourth section will constitute the outcomes of the research process and the answers to the research questions that form the rationale behind the performance of this research.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of the research is to attempt to investigate the perception that students who develop a positive association and a positive bond with the school are likely to perform well in their studies and can be expected to be less likely to engage in anti-social behavior once they reach adolescence.

The discussion will explore the reasons because of which students develop a positive perception and association with their school and the reasons because of which such an association can develop a negative polarity. Furthermore, the purpose of engaging in this analysis will be to determine the factors that influence students when they reach adolescence. Factors such as school environment, student perception of school environment, problematic behavior and the approach adopted by the staff towards problematic behavior will be considered to be critical in this process. Further explanation of the key factors considered for the research process has been provided in the chapter dedicated to the research design.

Research Question

The research will give relevance to the following research questions. These research questions will serve the function of defining the scope of the research and clarifying upon ...
