Introduction

The assessments of the students are the major issue in the education. Student assessment is a significant part in the development of the students. These assessments evaluate the student's performances and what they have learned in the class. Evaluation is a crucial element of the learning process. In schools, assessments are the most directly visible summative. They are used to measure what students learned at the end of a training unit, to get students from one class to another to ensure they have the required level for graduation or to access certain positions or to select students entering higher education.

Why Assess?

Assessment is a continuous process of collecting and interpreting information to assess decisions made in designing a learning system (Walsh, 2010). This definition has three important implications: first, assessment is an ongoing process and not something you do at the end of a course only. It is a process that begins before the start of instruction and continues until the end of it. Second, the assessment process is not subject to random but is directed towards a certain goal and purpose is to find answers on how to improve instruction (Suskie, 2004, pp. 84). Third, the assessment requires the use of measuring instruments to gather accurate and appropriate information that will enable you to know how the investigation progresses, how it will end and how to improve for next time.

Competence to meet Professional Standards

Assessment is an integral part of the learning process. It is intimately linked to the curriculum and teaching. At the same time that teachers and students work to achieve the learning outcomes of the curriculum, assessment plays an essential role in providing useful information to guide instruction to help students achieve next steps and to check the progress and achievements. The role of assessment is primarily to enhance the quality of teaching and improve student learning (Lewis et al, 2007, pp. 85).

Monitor Progress and Measure Effectiveness of Teaching

The information gathered as a result of the assessment enable students, teachers and parents and the educational community at large to be informed about the outcomes achieved at a specific time to celebrate successes, plan interventions and continue to foster success.

What to Assess?

The nursing students should be accessed on the basis of their attitudes, values and knowledge, combination of skills, technical capabilities which underpin effective and safe interventions and practices. The field of nursing is undoubtedly about identifying the personal goals, aims, thoughts and truths and connecting them with the professional goals of being a nurse. Every nurse comes in this filed for a variety of reasons and different events influence them to pursue the occupation of nursing. The interaction of patients with nurses is perhaps a very strong bond. The communication skills of a nursing student must also be assessed.
