Strategic Management: The Case of Tesco and Waitrose



Executive Summary

The paper deals with the understanding of strategic management process in a better way. Thus, for this project we analyze two major retail companies. Our project presents the elements and tools on the discipline of management control by critically analysing two major companies i.e. Tesco and John Lewis Partnership. Thus evaluating both the companies in the form of a comprehensive system of knowledge aimed at effective and efficient management of human and material resources allocated to each area or business unit, in order directions to obtaining business objectives today are necessary. Tesco is functioning well and providing services with its stores all around the world. For the legislations of employment, the government promotes retailers to supply a blend of job openings from low paying stretchy and locally based jobs to centrally located, skilled and high paying jobs in order to meet the needs of the students, working parents and senior citizens. Whereas Waitrose ranked second within supermarkets in the UK in 2011, with a 15% value share, as its bespoke customer service, high quality and ranges of food have remained strong with British consumers. The project is divided in three tasks and for the company's value chain analysis, we tried to relate it with management theory and practices. Thus, it is a fact that In turn, Waitrose's strategy has shaped its customer base. By attempting to draw in a wider range of consumers, the supermarket risks alienating its core shoppers and is putting itself in direct competition with other grocers better practised at pulling in the mass-market customer.

Introduction

Changes in the environment in which companies operate normally, have produced a series of innovations aimed at redesigning or streamlining of existing processes many years ago and to this perspective, the Company proposes to adapt the systems in order to provide the management tools to facilitate the achievement of strategic objectives, known as "Management Control".

Our project presents the elements and tools on the discipline of management control by critically analysing two major companies i.e. Tesco and John Lewis Partnership. Thus evaluating both the companies in the form of a comprehensive system of knowledge aimed at effective and efficient management of human and material resources allocated to each area or business unit, in order directions to obtaining business objectives today are necessary.

It is a fact that to achieve its aims and objectives, every company is structured in different organizational units, in turn these are under the direction of different managers with each of them, differentiated targets and a more or less autonomy in their decisions. For the behavior of these different organizational units is consistent with the goals and overall objectives, you need mechanisms to promote both the coordination and integration of their internal operations as the Company's adaptation to the environment.
