Storage Types

Introduction

This paper intends to discuss various storage types. The paper will provide a detailed and thorough analysis over the storage types from the perspective of information technology. An analytic framework will be adopted for the purpose of synthesizing the relevant literature to advance knowledge over the topic of storage types. The basic types of storage that are focused in this paper will include registers, primary storage and secondary storage. The purpose of this paper is to make the reader aware about the significance of various storage types from the viewpoint of information technology.

Data storage is generally known as memory or storage. This is the most important technology within the framework of information technology. Computers cannot run and perform tasks unless it possesses good storage types. The technology of storage is based upon various computer components and recording media as well (ITL, 2005). This technology is basically used to retain the digital data for the purpose of performing core functions of computers. Storage is assumed to be the most fundamental component of computers. The basic storage types that are under question for the purpose of this research paper are registers, primary storage and secondary storage (Anil, 2007).

Registers are assumed to be an abstraction of data storage elements. A register possess the capability for storing values from one assignment to another. The registers are mostly catered by various mechanisms irrespective of the actual memory (Barry, 2007). Registers can be accessed more quickly. Storage registers are normally utilized for storing data which is temporary in nature. It works like registers hold the data which is taken out from the actual memory or is about to be sent to the actual memory. It is important to realize that storage registers work as temporary storage type (Ralph, 2009).

On the other hand, primary storage is extremely important for the working of the computer systems. Primary storage is often used for storing data which is in active use within the computer systems. This storage type does not really store data for the purpose of backup. Primary storage is the main memory of the computer (Barry, 2007). This type of storage provides direct access to the central processing units of the computer systems. The central processing units are important for the purpose of reading instructions that are stored in the primary storage. Moreover, the central processing unit utilizes the instructions when required. Actively operated data is also stored in the uniform manner within the primary storage (ITL, 2005).

Processor registers and processor cache are two main components which facilitates the working of primary storage. Memory bus creates pathways to connect data from one part of the processor to another (Ralph, 2009). Primary storage is completely distinguishable from the secondary storage. Secondary storage is also known as auxiliary storage. This storage is used to store the data which is not available in the processor's primary storage. External storage is another word used for the secondary storage type. For instance, in personal computers; DVD and CD are commonly ...
