Stereotype

Introduction

One can define stereotypes as generalizations, or assumptions, that people make about the characteristics or behaviors of specific social groups or types of individuals. The stereotype is usually tax, according to the external characteristics, such as appearance (hair, eyes, skin), clothing, financial condition, behavior, culture, sexuality, and these ratings (labeling) is not always positive that can often cause certain impacts negative people (Kotter & Hess, 2012).

Discussion

In some cases stereotyped ideas are welcome, for example, the phrase “Brazil, soccer country.” This sentence demonstrates the passion that Brazilians have towards football. Obviously, there are Brazilians who do not like football, but is a stereotypical idea that does not cause negative impacts. However, there are stereotypical ideas about other nations who are prejudiced, for example, state that “Pakistan is the country of suicide bombers.” This generalization is not viewed favorably by the Pakistanis, since most people who live there is terrorism. The fact is that many stereotypes are usually acquired in childhood under the influence of parents, relatives, friends, and teachers and through the media. And when a stereotype is learned and stored in the brain, the tendency is to be passed to other people (Fridkin & Woodall, 2009).

We classify those stereotypes:

Gender stereotypes: stereotypes are directed to male and female. Previously heard a lot that the role of women was to marry and have children and the man was seen as the financial provider and had to focus on his career.
