Considering the text “The Open Boat”, the 'veneer of civilization' feels a little threatened by 'the brute within' at the time when the ship has been stuck deep, with the challenges experienced by the men that have become stuck in mud. Being stuck in the mud not only literally shows the intensity of the situation at hand, but also creates an extended impression in the mind of the reader that there are times where an individual might be stuck in a rut to the point where leaving one's presentable personality and characteristics do not measure up. Hence, to fulfill the need of the hour, it becomes difficult for individuals to make way for the challenges in ways they have been trained (Stasz, pp.15).

If one carefully excerpts and absorbs the concept behind 'The Open Boat', it shows how life moves around us; trouble comes to us in times that individuals continue to make way for the challenges the problems that we are faced with and that we witness on a daily basis (Wichlan, p.7). Every day comes as a challenge, some may be resolved with the outer experience, but sometimes, being close to nature, humans tend to emit 'the brute within'. Looking at the other pieces that Crane has brought forth, the piece 'I Saw A Man Pursuing His Horizon' shows details of how human beings form on the basis of their perception and their weapon of choice. Some come forth to be heroes so broad, monuments seem miniscule in front of them, while some choose to be fools, even at the time when all things bliss were in their favor and they didn't do much amount is.
