Cradle To Grave: Steel Manufacturing

Introduction

Cradle to grave is referred to as a fundamental feature of any creating process or building. This involves the examination of every step which is involved in the process, in order to get greater outcomes. It is possible to improve the existing destruction method and infrastructure creating. Wasted time, energy and resources can be secured by bringing modification of transportation, materials, product use, manufacturing and waste processes. All the elements of the processes are responsible for its success. In certain cases, some elements of the process are over looked while other elements are provided more consideration. In the proceeding discussion the cradle to grave of steel is discussed in which the complete process cycle of steel manufacturing is analyzed (Kaushish, 2010, pp. 89-92).

Discussion

A certain process is required for the development and manufacturing of any product. It not only requires a design process, but also a process of production. This production flow is commonly referred to as cradle to grave. The entire process of a product is the part of cradle to grave process. In cradle to grave process the assembling and modification of materials, the dispersal, the waste stream and the creation, all processes are tied together. It is the complete cycle which involves whole manufacturing process of any material to a final product, and then again turned into waste (Kaushish, 2010, pp. 89-92). The cradle to grave process of steel manufacturing involves various complex steps which start from the iron ore reduction to the final steel product. Steel is an alloy which has high ration of iron along with some carbon. Other elements are also present in steel in a small proportion. The physical and chemical properties of steel are highly dependent on the ratio of different alloys present in steel. Its properties are also dependent on the heat action of the metal. The complete process of steel production is briefly discussed below.

The manufacturing process of steel

The production of steel is a highly complex process which involves various steps in order to get the high quality steel. In the entire process an iron ore is transformed in steel. This conversion and transformation of iron ore into steel is performed into two most important steps (Kaushish, 2010, pp. 89-92). The first step, of converting iron ore into steel, involves the manufacturing of molten iron. The second step is the most important step and it involves the manufacturing of final product, steel. The entire process is briefly described below:

Production of molten iron

In this step, the coal and limestone is mixed along with primary concentrate. The mixture is then heated during which the oxides of iron are minimized in the solid form to metallic iron. It is then melts due to high temperature. During this process the impurities and pollutants are removed in the form of gas or slag.
