Introduction

Statistics presented by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) shows that violent crime in the United States has declined by 5.5% in year 2010 compare to 2009. In 2009, crime fell by 5.3%; according to FBI statistics, more than 1.3 million crimes committed in the United States. There has been much research in the area of race and criminal justice practices including pre-trial detentions, sentencing and so forth. This research paper explores to what extent prior arrest histories differ based on the racial group of the offender. Second part in this paper assesses the relationship between male and female for commission of drug offences. Third part assesses the difference between Pennsylvania felony defendant's fines in relation to fine amount (FINEAMT) for the entire population of felony defendants in the United States.

Section 1

The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of a factor used to compare several groups in a quantitative variable. ANOVA helps in predicting the relation between variable groups towards the dependent variable based on coherent properties of the independent variable. First question of the research examine whether significant difference exist in the mean number of prior arrests (PRIARR) among different racial/ethnic groups (RACE).

Variables included in the study are “Race group of the Detainee” as Independent Variable and the “prior arrest history (PRIARR)” as the Dependent Variable. Race of the household is categorized in five segments that are included in the analysis. These include White Americans, Black Americans, Amer Indian, Asiatic Oriental, and Other Mixed race groups.

Null Hypothesis

There is no statistically significant difference between prior arrest histories of felony belonging to White American, Black American, Amer Indian, Asiatic Oriental, and Mixed race groups.

Alternate Hypothesis

There is statistically significant difference between prior arrest histories of felony belonging to White American, Black American, Amer Indian, Asiatic Oriental, and Mixed race groups.

In order to test the above stated hypothesis, One-Way ANOVA is conducted on the date. Results of one way ANOVA are presented in the appendix table 1. Main notable thing to note is that sum of squares for the data is higher for the within groups as compare to between groups. Between Groups represent the 614.5 sum of squares out of 94147; whereas, Within Groups constitute 93533.1 sum of square value in total proportion of variance. F-value stood at 1.472, which is insignificant at 0.05 confidence interval level. This shows that ANOVA test for the ...
