Special Education - Why Inclusion is Important

Abstract

The research paper is aim to explain that why inclusion is important in special education. The research starts with the introduction, which tells that what are special education and the inclusion followed by the approaches that define the ability differences. The research tells about the benefits that inclusion has on classified children along with that how a child can be helped by the peer strategy.Table of Contents

Special Education - Why Inclusion is Important

Introduction

The education that is needs to cater special needs is Special education. The special education is design to cater the need to individual with different need and differences. It involves a planned and systematic monitoring of the individual and planning of teaching methodology, equipments, material and environment required for the individual. Special Education is a government plan working under the name of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), defined as: "Specially designed instruction, at no cost to parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability” (WrighSlaw, 2004).

Special education has origins in Inclusion. It has always been that special children are educated in special schools, which have not resulted in the betterment in establishing them in the main stream; since the organizational culture has not shifted it is strategies to support the special children in employment. To overcome the hurdle of mainstream the inclusion of special children was introduce to general education.

My thesis is: “Special needs student's when included in the regular class room gain as much from their peers as they do the teachers."

Discussion

Inclusion is not only about engaging the special student in the general education, it is about diversity, which benefits for all students along with special children by not letting them feel left out and providing access to all means of education. There are certain approaches that are to be review when categorizing the different abilities level. There are six approaches to ability differences (Peterson, Hittie, et. al, 2002).

Approaches to Ability Difference

One size fit all- Segregation: Children varies in their ability level, one size fit all means to teach everyone at the same level and those who are not compatible with it are to be separated.

Stable Ability grouping- it is making the group within the class according to the ability possessed by individual.

Pullout/ Pull aside Instruction- it is form of on one- one tutoring, where the instructor pull put the student and take the student at the back of side of the class to explain the work.

Adapting Curriculum- The changes are need on the bases of the ability of the student's comprehension, according to the complexity of the lesson.

Differentiated Instruction- The students work at different levels with different instruction but the quest for the same goal. The methodology differs from group depending on the group's ability to presume the same task effectively.

Authentic, Multi-Level Teaching- Learning in a heterogeneous group with instructions designed in a way that engage in learning according to their ability while receiving the support from the instructors.Instructional Strategies
