Southern Company

Introduction

Southern Company has four million customers and, capacity of nearly 39000 megawatts, is the Atlanta based Southern Company and, the super regional energy company in the South East and, considered as the leader of the electricity production in United States of America. The company owns the electric utilities in four states and, considered as the growing competitive generation company and, providing energy services business, and retail natural gas business, fiber optics and wireless communications.

Effectiveness of the strategic Leadership

It has been researched that, Southern Company hired individuals to fill the leadership gaps and, it was found that, company had the low turnover rate and, with the passage of time, Southern Company hired several leaders and, made group of leaders that contained immense business knowledge and, intermingled with the organizational culture. Southern Company had hired several individuals in 1970s and 1980s and, tends to hire till 2003 and, there are leaders who are going to retire within next months. Southern company had the criteria that, employees are eligible to retire at 50 years of service.

The leadership of Southern Company had played a significant role in the creation of performance strategy. When leaders identify several performance standards then, they become able to understand the leadership levels. Leadership competencies are also part of leadership skills which make best performances in any organization. If there is a competency based approach in an organization then, organization will produce better result than before. Organization can also generate future leaders by the help of competency based approach. Researchers have defined different leadership styles competencies and global competencies. There are some leadership competencies which are common to each organization. Researchers have focused few leadership competencies which are rare in organizations and, these organizations are leading other organizations.

Organization can easily implement a leadership brand. It has been researched that when investors develop confidence in leadership talent then, share price of an organization will increase. It is noticed that, if a unique brand of leadership and leadership competencies is developed then, all the stakeholders and organization will get a competitive advantage.

The strategic leadership of Southern Company is using strataplex model of leadership in order to reflect leadership style and performances. As we know that, leadership skills are categorized into cognitive, interpersonal, business and strategic (Mumford et, al, 2007).
