Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to test the hypothesis that students take sociology as a subject in order to be better prepared to facilitate social change. The primary research conducted here is on the basis of a bivariate statistical analysis, using their response to the hypothesis question and their ethnicities. The sample population for the survey is made of 1500 university students who have chosen the subject of sociology in their studies. The findings of the statistical survey support the research question and the hypothesis, however the study of results with adjusted variables and parameters would further help in conducting the research.

Introduction

The study of sociology has an important role to play in the transcendence and progress of society. Looking at the last 100 years, the modernization of societal perspectives has given way to breaking the stalemate of many taboo and obstacles which stood in the way of progress (Douglas, 1970). The mass of social movements were initiated by the youth, or social groups which were targets of obsolete stereotypes and generalizations, such as the Civil Rights, Feminist, and Gay and Lesbian movements in their respective eras. These were agents of social change which gave way to the intellectual, and thus social and economic growth of society.

In line with the above, this research seeks to test the hypothesis that students choose the subject of sociology in order to prepare them for helping change society. The primary research methodology for this paper is based on a bivariate statistical analysis, which tests the student sample, made up of 1500 university level sociology students who have opted for the study of the subject.

Defining the Basis Of The Topic

In definition, social change is termed to be the alteration in the social order of a society by way of transformations in behavioral patterns, stereotypes, schemas, norms, and values. The implications of social change are considered more long-term, as the purpose of the movement is translated into the change of perspectives at a variety of levels (Dwyer & Minnegal, 2010). For instance, the fight by African-Americans for equal rights with the Civil Rights movement helped significantly reduce the racial oppression faced by them against the stigma of a majority white population, and translated into benefits for other ethnic groups by way of making racial integration acceptable in the masses. This can be observed by how the United States gradually embraced further integration by way immigrants from a wider range of nations (such as Indian, Chinese, and Middle-Eastern migrants).

The reasons why we highlight social movements as agents of change are by way of their results. Another related factor to consider, in line with our hypothesis, is the role of youth activism. Many significant movements highlighting social change were initiated by college and university students and made an enormous impact on the perspectives of the younger generation.
