Sociological Imagination

The concept of the sociological imagination was invented in the year 1959 by an American sociologist C. Wright Mills. He described the kinds of approaches presented by the field of sociology. Some sociologists do not agree to the concept but most of them agree to the concept. Sociological imagination is defined by Mills as brilliant knowledge of relationship among the whole society and individual experience. Sociological imagination is the ability to transfer from one perception to another perception.

Benefits of Using the Sociological Perspective

Generally, there are four benefits and advantages of utilizing sociological perspective. They are explained below.

It tests our common perceptions about us and others to be able to criticize and evaluate the truth of familiar supposition.

It helps us in recognizing both limitations which restrict our lives and opportunities which we enjoy.

It helps in empowering us and makes us dynamic members of the society and world with the help of our sociological perspectives which is the ability to understand the interaction between the personal and social forces.

It also helps us in recognizing the diversity of humans and their abilities to comprehend the challenges of existing in the diversified world.

Difference between Sociological Perspective and Common Sense

Mostly people make mistakes in believing that sociology is related to studying the obvious. These people argue that study of sociology is not more than the appliance of common sense. However, comparison of a scientific study with mere common sense cannot be declared as truth. Usually, common sense is not common or sensible. For example, many statements, such as Opposites attract and Birds of a feather flock together, are established on common understandings but, are not true. In fact, these statements disagree with each other.
