Adolescence is the word used to describe the transitional stage in human being from the stage of childhood to adulthood. It generally represents the teenage years of the human being, ranges from 13 to 19. During this transitional phase, the individuals face psychological and physical changes in themselves. This phase of life is a critical point from the perspective of learning, development, and nurturing of any individual, as the transitional phase brings issues of self-identity and independence of an individual.
This essay is aimed at providing the scenario based discussion in the light of the relevant social theories that might be applicable to the presented scenario. The scenario is apparently presenting the picture of young people's transition to adulthood (more specifically in the teenage parenthood) and the emotional and psychological situation they might have to face. An effort is made to put the focus of study on the type of circumstances the youth might face in such a situation. Finally, few of the social theorists and their relevancy of work are also highlighted in the essay.
Discussion
With the changing time, the nature of human development is evolving around different perspectives. The transition to adulthood is the phenomenon that has been the topic of many research studies for the past few years (Jensen, 2011, p. 255). The results show that the process of transition to the adulthood stage has become more complicated than in the past. Now there is hardly a line of distinction between childhood and adulthood (Morrow & Richards, 1996, p. 1). Young people have been adopting diverse pathways in the transition to adulthood, but are being equally constrained by external factors. The importance of social institutions and social inequalities in undermining the transition of youth has become increasingly apparent (Barry, 2006, p. 3).
Hall's Theory of Adolescence
The perspective of adolescence psychology was pioneered by an American psychologist G. Stanley Hall. According to Hall, there is a direct relation between the psychological development and the biological factors, which help in the growth and nurturing of the individuals. Hall identified the adolescence theory of psychology as “Storm and Stress” (Arnett, 2006). He said that this phase of life in an individual brings lot of shifts in the emotions and moods of them.
As Hall suggested the transition phase to adolescence is the age when the physical structure, mental thinking and bodily hormones execute drastic changes in themselves. As the human structure grows physically taller and stronger, the psychological thinking of the child transforms into a man's thinking ability. However he or she does not have the skills developed equal to a young person but their psychological state makes them rebellious from the society especially against their parents.
The hormones of the individual grow in all aspects. The desires of sex, power and popularity increases immensely in the individuals in this phase, and in order to satisfy this hormonal growth of the physical body adolescents often land up in the evil end of the ...
