Introduction

Social work is understood as a practical science. The aim of social work is to reduce or prevent social problems and the promotion of social participation. It is thus a form of practiced social policy, but relies on an independent professionalism. This essay will critically be evaluating the concept of social work, in relation to assessment, it shall give an insight of what assessment means and how it is used in social work process and it shall be in an area of practice that is in relation to working with children or adult with mental health issue. . An analysis of the ecological perspective, the system theory and the psychodynamic perspective will be done. The strengths and weaknesses of the theory will also be later discussed in the essay. Lastly, the anti discriminatory and the anti oppressive practices will be highlighted in the later part of the essay and will be incorporated into the theories that are discussed in the paper. Finally, this essay shall review the ethical issues and the implication for anti-oppressive practice in relation to social work assessment with children or adult with mental health issues, how does anti-oppressive practice in social work impact with these service users, in relation to their gender, race, disability, ethnicity, age, class, education, health, etc will also be a part of the discussion.

Social Work Process

The process of social work does not mostly follow a linear order. It is more of a circular process which brings the social worker form one-step to another in a cyclical way. The social worker may start from the assessment, go to the implementation and evaluation and then reach back to the assessment once again. Social work process has a fluid nature. Despite of the fluidity of the nature of social work, some steps and procedures are the heart of all the processes of social work. Some of the tasks of social work are discrete and short, while others are lengthy and complex. Some tasks are overlapping and are often revisited after a certain period of time when the service user is involved in the process (Trevithick, 2008). The process of social work includes steps that are necessary to make the most of the social work for the client. The steps that are included in the social work are

Collecting information about the client which is included in the assessment part

Analyzing the information and making sense out of it. This is the diagnosis part of the process.

The third step includes collaboration with the client which can help the provider of the social work to chalk out some plan which can help the client in the problems that he is experiencing. This is the treatment plan of the social work process.

The last process of the social work is the phase of determining that the social work has been beneficial for the client or not. This is the phase of evaluation of the process of social work.
