Introduction

The origins of social work can be traced back to the pre-Modern history, and the concept of social work to be considered as a practice developed only in the mid of 19th century, and now it is widely recognized and appreciated. Now social work has evolved to gain the status of a profession and is given a professional status in many of the western countries, a process that started during the early decades of the 20th century (Adams, 2009, pp. 20). During all these years, the industrialised society has usually been defined as having gone through a transformation which cannot be recognized with regards to certain aspects, such as the true nature people, the conditions of humans. Other than that, the society has changed to a major extent from the infrastructure to the way people perceive things and form their beliefs about culture, society, and humanity.

There are certain critical issues about which debate is always going on between social scientists and historians, and those issues are of poverty, the needs which place an impact on people around the world and the vulnerability which exists with regards to many problems. The needs and issues which affect people around the world during different times and to different extents, need to be considered while studying and analyzing social work (Adams, 2009, pp. 46). As the world has progressed and evolved with the changing times, development can be seen with respect to these issues and that development is known as social work.

What is Social Work

Social work is considered to be the epitome of the context of society. The work that is done by individuals or institutions for the purpose of improvement of the social condition and improves the state of problems of society is referred to as social work or social service. The bases for rendering social work are the humanitarian considerations and there is no motive that lies underneath for any kind of profit, by the ones who render the social services (Glasby, 2012, pp. 16). The people who contribute for social work and are ready to volunteer are the ones for whom the interests of the society are of significant importance and they consider to keep the betterment of society above their personal interests, which is why they are eager to come forward for rendering social services. The idea of social work is based on the idea of brotherhood and betterment of man.

It is important to help people who are in distress and the help is considered as noble because it improves the living consideration of the ones who are deprived and are not affluent. However, it is pertinent to note that social services cannot be provided without the element of self-sacrifice. People who are involved in social work and social services devote a lot of their time and their energy to it.
