Irvin Spergel is considered to be one of the most acknowledged experts relating with the study of gangs. He was a lecturer at the College of Chicago and wrote many volumes and revised more than hundred editorials, accounts, chapters and books on the topic of street gang prevention, together with society mobilization and gang problem resolving approaches. He specialized in the subject matter of gang problems and offered practical modes and intervention to rectify the issue. He developed his interest in the research on gangs at the time when he was working with young gang groups from 1952 to 1960, being a part of the Youth Panel in the city of New York. It was an organization that worked for the betterment of young people. He did other community works at Wilmington and New York City. According to him, classic methodologies of dealing with the issue of gang were not beneficial to resolve the matter. Community agencies were drawing out for support with the dilemma, and the law enforcement were turning out to be more concerned, but the gang groups still ongoing, even after young people are trapped and under arrested. In his commendable work, Youth Gang Problem: A Community Approach (1995), is a determining effort that defined a framework — currently known as the Spergel Model — for interference that has been implemented by the Judiciary Department to struggle with gang hostility all over the United States.
