The Social Networking Fatigue

Introduction

The explicit meaning of this cartoon is very clear, we see a person is bombarded with messages and news feeds from different social networking websites and the person is unable to handle all of them at once. There is piling up of files in the picture which shows that the messages and requests are piling up. The implicit meaning of this cartoon suggests that since the person is unable to deal with all of them at once, they are gathering to cause a huge pile up. This is causing panic in the person and she does not how to deal with it. This panic might lead to frustration and other mental and psychological issues in the person affected by these bombardments of messages.

Discussion

The situation of Caro who was an escrow officer and 28 years of age is somewhat similar to the person in the cartoon. She also became a member of different websites and shared her likes and dislikes in programs. Additionally she wanted he cat to have friends so she joined a website related to the pets of different people and shared information about her cats. But she observed that towards the end of the day that is what she was always doing, sharing information and nothing else. It was then that she realized that what good this sharing of information would do to her or her cats in the long run. That was the realization moment in her life (Lee, 2006). She must be facing more or less similar situation as depicted in this picture. This picture shows a setting and background of an office, which implies that a person is sitting in the office and then she is being bombarded with all these friends request and messages in the office. This might disturb her productivity and performance in the office as well since she is so stuck up and busy in replying to the messages all the time and still she is unable to deal with them. It is suggested by the writer that though people want to become members of such site willingly but the cramming and piling up of the data is also causing an opposite reaction in the form of social networking fatigue. And that is what exactly this picture is implying to that a person first becomes a member of so many sites out of his curiosity and tendency to socialize because it is so compelling. Everyone is doing the same without realizing that from where on earth would they find time to deal with all these messages and reply to them provided they have jobs, work and other responsibilities to look after as well. Dave Taylor who was 44 and worked as a marketing consultant also explained that he joined around 15 social websites and now it is causing him social networking fatigue (Lee, 2006).
