Introduction

Marriage or wedlock has many definitions depending on the culture. In general, marriage is a social and legal union between opposite sex that establishes rights and responsibilities between them as spouses. We can also say that, marriage is a procedure by which two people declare their relationship officially, and promise a permanent bond of love with each other for their entire life.

Marriage serves as the foundation of a new family, and a family is the building block of human civilization. The concept of a family separates homo-sapiens from mammals. It is a lifelong commitment between a husband and a wife, who lives together and nurture their off springs. It is not only about feeding them but also teaching those values and ethics. Ideally this union of love and promises should be ever-lasting. However, in today's society we observe that a happily married couple breaks up after spending years together. The rising trend of separation and divorces indicates a high level of social problems in a society. We cannot fix social problems unless we address its root cause. More than 85% of people think that a disrupted family is the cause of every social problem (www.theguardian.co.uk). They believe anxiety and grief can invoke uncivilized behavior in any civilized person. Unfortunately, many of us fail to recognize the strength of traditional marriages.

There are many benefits of marriage in a society. Children raised by their parents are more likely to complete their education. The chances of poverty to strike him are too little. Besides finances, we know a person needs unconditional emotional support. Many people consider their family as a source of strength. Social issues like crime, theft, drugs, fraud all have an immediate link to a poor family setup.

This paper presents an analysis of conflicts in a marriage and explains factors which contribute towards a marriage failure. The paper also discusses the importance of mediation for a successful marriage and the after effects of a broken marriage. The role of a mediator is very important in this context. A little discussion on the marriage in primitive society will help establish a proper context.

In the ancient days of human civilization, there were no rules or laws for marriages. The researchers say it was nature who planted love for having off springs which resulted in the emergence of marriage as an institution (Blankenhorn 2007, p. 23). The Greek philosopher Aristotle describes the concept of a family in a very understandable way. According to him, it is the inborn instinct of a man to pair up with a woman, and for a woman, it is her natural desire to have more of her kind (Blankenhorn 2007, p. 23).
