Introduction

With an alarming increment in the number of people smoking in United States, it has been suggested that some social awareness campaigns should be run in order to make people aware of the bad consequences of smoking. The objective of the campaign is to motivate people to quit smoking, create awareness about the adverse effects of smoking on males and female, awareness about the health situations after smoking cessation. These are the major objectives of the campaign. However, starting a campaign requires a lot of time and efforts as there are a number of factors that can influence health promotion campaigns (Oriola, 2009).

People cannot be easily convinced for changing their lifestyles which they have been following for years. Change comes with the passage of time. Before starting any campaign, it must be understood that process of bringing improvement is very slow and calls for real patience. There are chances when one gets hopeless and desperate when the results are not desirable, but the need is to be consistent and perseverance in the path of helping people getting out of the social vice that is costing the lives of hundreds of people every year (McKenzie, 2012).

Every region has its own culture based upon beliefs, principles and traditions. These traditions are so dear to people that changing them or even discussing can bring resentment in them. Health beliefs are a serious concern. Many people do not eat meat as it is not permitted in their religion. In these regions, no one is allowed to talk on the topic. In this situation, bringing change is hard to accomplish (Davies, 2007).

Education plays a very crucial role in making the mindset of the people. An educated person will listen to the advices and ponder over it and shows his consent on making it part of his life. The areas where education and literacy rate is not up to the required standards, a health promotional campaign is a big challenge (McKenzie, 2012).

Among the various factors as a barrier to the campaign, industrial concerns cannot be ignored. There is no way to convince the owner of the land for tobacco cultivation to stop cultivating tobacco, as it is his bread butter.
