Introduction

Smoking is a global issue. Smoke not only affects the health of smoker but also the people around the person smoking. World health organization also has highlighted the issue regarding passive smoking and its consequences to health. In the current scenario, government of United Kingdom has taken more concerns about the passive smokers. The government has decided to implement respective legislation across the regions of United Kingdom, for the protection of customers and workers from the smoking environment (Eadie et al, 2010, pp. 13-26). Australia, United Kingdom and Singapore are leading tourist sources and their governments have banned smoking in the lobbies of hotel (Viriyachaiyo and Lim, 2009, pp. 238-240).

The worldwide problem of the smoking ban in restaurants, hotels and other public places has taken effects in various regions of world encompassing Asia, Australia, USA, UK and Europe. These countries have gained the concentration of international media and substantially debated the hospitality industry. In United Kingdom, there is a total ban of smoking inside hotels, clubs, bars, restaurants, and all the public places. The main issue related to the smoking ban is faced by a hospitality industry of UK, which is becoming more displeased.

There is a relation between the sickness and smoking. The smoke of tobacco leads to cause several kinds of cancer, cardiovascular disorders and other chronic, as well as the life threatening consequences. Therefore, it is essential to provide protection to the public. Medical statistics show that illness caused by smoking is the major factor of 25 % of deaths in United Kingdom. Moreover, there is a high risk of lung cancer in non-smoker (Quoix, 2007, pp. 10-15). With respect to the health conditions, government introduced the smoking bans in restaurants, hotel and other public places. The purpose is to provide a smoke free, healthy and clean environment to the workers, as well as the other customers.

Government of United Kingdom implemented the smoke-free law on June 1, 2004. Investigators analysed the effects of such laws and demonstrated the effective results. According to Melberg and Lund (2012, pp. 93-99), the smoking ban has reduced the total dust and airborne nicotine in restaurants and pubs.
