Introduction

One of the most useful and commonly used software used for video conferencing (Video communication) is Skype, which is a software application that allows users to make audio and video calls over the Internet. One of the best features of the application is that it is free to call other users who are also using Skype services. This software is popular for its added features which include instant messaging and video conference. It is not just serious software for professionals, but a fun tool which can be used by anyone, either to hand out with friends when physical union is not possible, or to have a group study session over the Internet. This report discusses the downside and security issues of Skype while attempting to incorporate it in professional organizations and working environment.

Technology evolves as the need to communicate grows ever larger. With faster internet providers come the need to communicate better using as many mediums as possible, be it audio, both or both. Skype being an application which supports both these format is the premium choice of almost all social tech users (Chiang, 2006). Its registered users are given a unique Skype id allowing them to communicate with each other for free using instant messaging, voice and video chat. Audio and video chat can be used for one on one communication, or video or audio conferencing. Skype allows users to use a variety of features in their instant messaging service, like group messaging, emotions, status updates and editing of previous messages.

The audio and video communication plays a pivotal role in the organization. With the success of such communication technology, new evolutions were seen adapting to new available technologies. Skype is not only a convenient tool for individuals but also a very valuable communication tool for businesses that were now able to engage in frequent audio communication over large distances via online calls, or group conferences for discussions and meetings. The 21st century has seen breath taking evolution in such communication technologies in unimaginable ways. From the introduction of cell phones in the last few decades which allowed users to make and receive calls from anywhere, using miniature portable cellular phones, using wireless communication technology, to the use of email and Skype. This enabled users to sent letters around the globe in an instant with the help of the Internet, which not only revolutionized the communication as we knew it, but also the way people interacted or did business. Today, most business no longer uses snail (traditional) mail services and relies solely on email due to their speed and reliability.

Businesses and organizations can also benefit from the features such as video conferences. The adaption of video cameras and faster Internet providers made possible, the streaming and passing of images in the form of videos across the Internet over vast distances.
