Objective of the study

To study the benefits from implementation of Skype to communicate with buyers of the business and identification of potential risk and disadvantages for the business while implementing it.

Research method

Qualitative research has been used to identify the potential scope of Skype for business. The sources are different books and online data available. Personal experience of the application is also done.

Introduction

Communication plays a vital role in integrating business. It is difficult for any business to grow effectively without proper communication channel. To maintain contact it is important communicate with each other. Business can effectively maintain information and develop strategies by proper communication with its stakeholders. Communication is an important component that contributes in growth of business (Fielding, 2006).

There are various methods used for communication and different costs are associated with each method. Skype is a communication tool which offers free communication based on internet. It offers video conference, voice calls and also text messages. Brief description of Skype is discussed later. Skype is a cheap method for communication among individuals (Panko & Panko, 2010).

Skype

It is a Voice over IP (VoIP) proprietary application. Skype was first launched in 2003. Skype services enable users to communicate using microphone for voice, webcam for video, and text messaging using internet (Panko & Panko, 2010). It is peer to peer (P2P) VoIP service that offers its customers free call from Skype to Skype using internet and Skype also offers reduced calling rates to other phones. There are various features that Skype currently offers including instant messages, phone calls and video calling. However, Skype is the most popular service in its category of P2P VoIP. The most important component in Skype popularity is its free Skype calls to Skype (Skype, 2013).

Working of Skype

Skype does not completely reveal its working protocols and also tries not to disclose its working. Its working protocols are just estimated by the researchers. Below is the figure that depicts the most probable way of Skype's working. It is also said that they frequently changes their protocols to keep their secret (Panko & Panko, 2010).

Skype has three key elements which are present in Skype network and those are: Skype login server, super nodes and host nodes.

In Skype network its login server is the central server that is managed by the Skype. And it is the single centralized part in the complete Skype network. On host computer the application that runs Skype is called host node. And the super node is the modified form of host node in which host node does a job of signaling. It is notable that every host node may become super node based on some conditions such as network bandwidth, CPU and required memory. All these three components of the Skype network are used in three phases that occur for every user before he makes call with Skype.
