Key Skills

Key skills are those fundamental, taken for granted, skills that we all use in carrying out a wide range of everyday tasks and activities, and as we learn new things. These generic skills are not only essential to effective learning and performance, they are also highly valued by employers who want flexible, adaptable individuals who are capable of identifying their own learning needs and in taking the initiative in continuing professional development (Gallagher, 2010).

All higher education programmes should specify the learning outcomes that students will achieve in terms of:

knowledge and understanding

key skills

cognitive skills

subject - or occupation specific skills'

'All higher education programmes should incorporate the following four key skill areas:

communication

information technology

numeracy

learning how to learn' This is also the set of key skills that the QAA refer to.

There are a great many other key skills, some of these can be considered part of the above lists:

personal and interpersonal skills

problem solving, organisational skills

bilateral thinking

information structuring, analysis and synthesis

reasoning and reflection

critical thinking and argumentation skills

ability to deal with change

attitudinal skills (values, identity, integrity)

discipline specific key skills (for instance diagnostic skills for veterinary science)

team work and leadership skills

language skills University of Kent (3) states:

"'Key Skills' is the most recent description of those generic skills identified as important in equipping graduates with the competencies required by employers.

Key skills are thus an important part of the government's current education, including Higher Education, agenda." The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority defines six key skills:

Communication

Application of Number [Numeracy]

Information Technology

Improving One's Own Learning and Performance
