Single Sex Education vs. Co-Education

Introduction

The modernization of life demands upon top quality schooling. In order to generate effective results from individuals along with the maintenance of quality human resources, proper schooling and educational system is required (Blessing, 2005). The primary aim of schools and educational systems primarily is to work on raw pupils and to transform them completely according to the needs and demands of the current industrial and technical market. These people will develop either passive or active personalities and display traits that would fit their surrounding and environment in which these individuals shall excel and work.

One of the key issues regarding schooling has constantly been a subject of talks and debates. The issue is regarding the two basic types of educational systems that have been made on the basis of sex or gender (Datnow & Hubbard, 2008). These systems are single sex education and co-education. The long standing debates have remained unsuccessful to find out that which type of educational system is more effective and beneficial from educational perspective and thus no proper conclusion can be made about it. The opinion about the issue of being taught together or separately is divided into two groups within opponents of single schools and proponents of these types of educational institutions.

Recent research shows that single sex education yields better academic results as compared to co-education system (Datnow & Hubbard, 2008). In addition, there are differences in educational development of boys and girls, and their study can be affected in terms of being taught together or separately. Therefore, there is a need to teach both of them separately. This research paper aims to discuss the key findings relating to both the educational systems with measuring the benefits and limitations of both.

An example of such opportunity can be taken of the allocation of social interaction between male and female students which helps to develop their communication skills while talking to an opposite gender person.

However, some authors are of the opinion that this social interaction may produce a negative impact. On the other hand, some authors believe that provision of gender equality is not that simple and its provision may involve the systems to go beyond access. The concept of equality is however debatable in educational systems considering its variable definitions from varying people and the affect it can create on individuals and ...
