CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Overview of the topic

The current law prohibits euthanasia in UK. This is the reason why there are increasing numbers of terminally ill British citizens who travel to different countries in order to end their lives in a legal way. There has been a debate in the recent years regarding the legality of Euthanasia in UK. There are many countries that have made assisted suicide legal which includes Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and US State of Oregon. In US as well, there has been a major debate regarding the right to life because every person has its own views on this matter. The media coverage has also highlighted the importance of this issue. The media also covered some high profile cases in order to demonstrate the value of the topic.

There was a survey conducted by the British Social Attitudes which stated the views of the respondents towards this issue. There were three categories under this option which were divided among the people. The first category of the public represented 86% who stated that they would support the euthanasia for an individual who is not expected to recover from unconsciousness and also those people who are on a life support machine. There were 44% who gave support to those people who are suffering from non-painful illness. There were then 12% who gave support to those people who were suffering from tired of living. Though, there was a section of the society who opposed the legalization of euthanasia in UK. The reason is that people felt that it will cause negative consequences for the country. There were some moral and financial implications which were also examined in detail in this matter. This is the reason why there is a need for a much detailed debate in the future. Therefore, all the issues related to the legalization of Euthanasia will be discussed in detail.
