Renewable Energy Corporation: Sharp Solar

Introduction

Sharp Corporation celebrated their 100th anniversary in the year 2012. The corporation started its operation in the year 1912 with the invention of “Mechanical Pencils” by Tokuji Hayakawa, founder of the Sharp Corporation. Many achievements and inventions are associated with this company including building of world's first electronic calculator and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and Japan's first radio, microwave oven and TV. Sharp remained an undisputed leader in the market of electronic devices throughout the world for a very long time. With increasing competition, the sales of Sharp Corporation witnessed a significant growth (Sharp, 2013). This contribution was mainly due to the creation and innovation processes employed by Sharp in the field of electronics which helped them in retaining their position in the global market. Optoelectronics remained the core technology of Sharp in which the corporation retained their position as a market leader. Sharp Corporation continued to surpass others in terms of reliability and data compression and transfer rates. The strategies and management of Sharp has contributed largely to the corporation's performance and innovations (Sharp Solar, 2013).

In the year 1959, Sharp decided to enter the emerging field of renewable energy sources i.e. solar technology by researching the technology of photovoltaic modules (PV). The company after research phase started the mass production of PV modules in the year 1963. Since then, their progress in the field of solar technology remained extraordinary both in terms of sales and revenues. The mission of Sharp to provide environmental and ecological friendly energy to the world has led the company to put tremendous research and development in the field of solar technology. One of the major example of Sharp's success in the field of solar technology is the designing and development of solar cells for power production in Japanese satellites.

Why Renewable Energy Sources?

Most of the nations, whether developed, developing or underdeveloped rely on fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas as a primary source of energy. The nature of these sources is that they are non-renewable finite resources which are depleting at a tremendous pace. Many researches indicate that the fossil fuel sources will either deplete or shall become increasingly expensive over the next few decades. Also, major environmental issues have also arisen by the excessive utilization of fossil fuel resources. The emission of hydrocarbons and greenhouse gases has raised their levels in the atmosphere to a hazardous extent which have caused numerous issues such as global warming, depletion of ozone layer, melting icecaps etc. Due to these factors, the world is now shifting towards the paradigm of renewable energy which include solar, wind, tidal, bio energies etc (Renewable Energy, 2013).

The primary advantage of renewable energy is that they are derived from natural resources and have renewable nature. The power sources based on tidal, solar energies shall never run out of energy. Another primary advantage of the renewable energy technologies is that environmental impacts of renewable energy sources are much lesser and less hazardous ...
