Shakespeare's "mid-summer night's dream"

Introduction

Romantic love seems in some distinct modes in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Hermia and Lysander illustrate juvenile love, while Helena's love is that of desperation (Kott 23). Demetrius' love is fickle. Theseus profits his "love," Hippolyta, as a trophy of war. Titania and Oberon, wed for ages, impose agony and trickery on each other regularly.

In Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" the mortal teenage individual characteristics drop in love foolishly, and the feature Bottom states, "O what fools these mortals be". They are foolish because they proceed like children. Although Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, and Helena emerge grown-up, when they are in love they proceed foolishly. The four teenage lovers are fools (Igertz 153).

Demetrius is a fool because he is ignorant that his love alterations throughout the play(Garlick 41). At the start of the play Demetrius does not love Helena. (II ii,line 188) Demetrius states, "I love thee not, thus chase me not." (II ii,line 194) "Hence, get thee gone, and pursue me no more." In III ii, Demetrius after being juiced starts to love Helena. (III ii,line 169-173) Demetrius states, "Lysander, hold thy Hermia; I will none. If e'er I loved her, all that love is gone. My heart to her but as guest- shrewd sojourned, And now to Helen is it dwelling returned, There to remain." This verifies he is a fool, because he is not cognizant of his altering love for Helena.

Helena is a fool because Demetrius does not love her but she still perseveres in following him. Demetrius displays no love for Helena(Forey 321). (II i,line 227-228) Demetrius states, "I'll run from thee, and conceal me in the brakes, And depart thee to the clemency of untamed beasts." (II i,line 199-201) "Do I tempt you? Do I talk you fair? Or rather manage I not in plainest reality Tell you I manage not, neither I will not love you?" Demetrius apparently shows to Helena that he has no concern, but Helena persists. (II i,line 202-204) Helena states, "And even for that manage I love you the more. I am your spaniel; and, Demetrius, The more you trounce me, I will fawn on you." (II i,line 220-222) "Your virtue is my privilege. For that It is not evening when I manage glimpse your face, Therefore I believe I am not in the night;" This verifies that Helena is a fool because Demetrius does not love her, but she still persists.

Lysander is a fool because he convinces Hermia to bypass death and run away with him (Empson 223). Hermia should wed Demetrius or she will be put to death. (I i,line 83-88) Theseus states, "Take time to hesitate, and, by the next new moon- The sealing-day betwixt my love and me, For everlasting bond fellowship- Upon that day either arrange to pass away For disobedience to your father's will, Or additional to got married Demetrius, as he would," Hermia does not love Demetrius.
