INTRODUCTION

The first chapter of this research is the introduction. The introduction chapter will highlight the aim of the dissertation, and provide a basic review of concepts related to the research topic. Domestic violence is a common problem in our society. Domestic violence can be described as the unfair use power and control in close relationships. The term domestic violence has been explained in different ways in different times (Cleary, 2004).

Background of the Study

The occurrence of domestic violence is considered to be a destructive force that exists within close relationships. According to the Social Control Theory, people hit household abuse on others because they can. According to the Social Control Theory, household abuse is a form of learned response. Household abuse is associated with a series of factors including stress, dissatisfaction in relationships, aggressive personalities of individuals, and alcohol abuse. Another perspective on household abuse has been provided by the Attachment Theory. According to this theory, the offender has a poor history of emotional attachment during childhood. This eventually results in the development of a lack of ability to build trust among close relatives. These feelings consequently turn into anger and anxiety (Cheung, Leung & Tsui, 2009, pp. 447).

What services are available for male victims of domestic violence in the UK?

Rationale of the Study

The study is based on the rationale that male victims of household abuse receive less support than female victims. The cases of male domestic violence are unreported, and the police do not pay adequate attention to these cases. This study aims to identify different services that are available for male victims of domestic violence.

Aim of the Study

The aim of this study is to understand services available for male victims of domestic violence. The study will review statistics available on male domestic violence victims, the kinds of abuse, the reporting of cases of male domestic violence, and the response of police and other forces towards these incidences. In this way, the study will evaluate the level of services that are provided to men when they are subjected to domestic violence.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Male domestic violence is generally not considered a serious issue. Society does not believe men who report the case of domestic violence. As a result, feeling of shame and guilt is created. The perceptions of the society about men and women have passed down from several generations (Langlands, Ward & Gilchrist, 2009, pp. 113). The general perceptions of society about men and women have had a negative impact on the reality of domestic violence. The views of the society about domestic abusee have been shaped largely because of the media coverage (Shuler, 2010, pp. 163). The media has portrayed male as abusers and female as victims (Kernsmith, 2005, pp. 173). Both men and women are considered to be the victims of domestic abusee.
