Florida Prison Population

Florida officials want to send a message to immigrants who are not U.S. citizens and are serving sentences for nonviolent crimes to return to their countries of origin. The Department of Corrections and Florida Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, are discussing the proposal with federal officials as a way to relieve the pressures of immigration and help to control the explosive growth of the prison population in Florida, which could achieve the 100,000 inmates by the end of this year.

The offer to return to their countries could extend only some 2,500 immigrants already in the country legally or illegally, who have not committed violent crimes, and are not U.S. citizens, and agree to return and their countries of origin permaneceren .

It costs about $ 20,000 a year in jail to keep an inmate, feed and watch, so that would be great to get out of these guys for a plane ticket that costs $ 600. It is likely that the governor commute the sentences of those agreeing to leave the country. And the Federal agency Immigration and Customs Enforcement will have to have some involvement in the handling and transport convicts. It is believed that a similar program of deportation'' fast'' is being considered in Arizona and New York.Nonviolent inmates in those states have yet to meet a small part of his sentence (Goldsmith, 2004).
