Self Regulation and Motivation

Introduction

Self regulation is an individual's capacity that involves the alteration of one's behavior. It increases the very adaptability and flexibility of the human behavior, and enables an individual to make the necessary adjustments of his actions to a very broad range of situational and social needs. It is also considered to be a very essential conception related to the desirable behavior and the free will behavior of an individual. It offers benefits to the society as well as the individual along with a very good self-control, (Mak, 2001). It helps an individual or an organization to achieve the outcomes that they desire, such as; work success, mental health and popularity, for that matter, (Rynes, 2004). It also helps an individual to maintain good and healthy interpersonal relationships.

Motivation in this regard is not much appreciated generally in psychology. This is because of the cognitive revolution, which has in the very recent years, having induced many researchers not to think in motivational terms, however in cognitive terms, (Bandura, 1988). The very role of motivation, in self regulation has not been fully understood, and has been under estimated. The relevancy to a self regulation spans over a greater range, from self regulation to confluence.
