Contribution of Public and Private Policing in Securing Social Order

Introduction

Social order refers to a situation whereby people have a way of behaviour which is civil and normal. This represents the way in which the people of a society interact with each other, and the customs they follow. UK may be considered as a mixed economy whereby the responsibility of maintaining social order rests on the shoulder of both the public and private organizations involved in policing. The number of organizations has expanded a great deal than what it was 20 years back. The various services that were previously under the responsibilities of the public police only will now be privatized through invitation of bids. The paper discusses the contribution of both the private and public policing in controlling crime and maintaining social order. It also discusses how collaboration between the public and private policing is a better approach for increasing the effectiveness of public safety and crime prevention (BUTTON, , pp.45-56, 2002).

Discussion

Social order is not just a group of people living a certain way of life and one which is regulated by a group of organizations. Social order is married with security. This means that people have the liberty to pursue their ends and their rights are assured so that no one man can infringe upon the similar rights of another man and where no one man can harm another man. Social order also means that people do not have any fears. They live peacefully and without unnatural loss and injury (MYTHEN, G., & WALKLATE, 2007).

The private sector has taken up various responsibilities that were initially in the hands of the public police only. These include responsibilities that ensure that the basic human needs of all individuals are being met, and the system of internal and external safety is sound. The main social order responsibilities that are now in the hands of the private organizations are investigation of crimes, detention of people who are suspects, and the patrol of neighbourhoods to keep a check on what goes around in the neighbourhoods. This goes to show that the private sector with so many and so important share of responsibilities can contribute a great deal in order to ensure higher social order. They can work independently or work with other private organizations to assure that all goes well. Most private organizations of policing have been criticized as not having community safety the highest priority in their goals (Northedge, 2005).

Any society in the world is dependent on various bodies and organization for various things. For instance, the administration of justice is the supposed responsibility of courts, the administration of punishment rests with the social regulations authorities and the restoration and maintenance of social order is the responsibility of police forces, whether public or private.
