School safety and security

Introduction

Schools in our society must represent a place of heaven for the purpose of learning and teaching. Atmosphere of schools must be free from violence and crime (Anonymous, 2013). Any kind of crime or violence within the atmosphere of school not only target individuals rather it affects the whole educational process, the surrounding community and school itself. Increment in the insecurity of the school has been found in the past decade after the attack of columbine Sandy hook which is making school administrators to struggle for the safety and security for the staff and students (Anonymous, 2013).

Survey on safety and crime made by National center of education statistics reports that security measure types include most commonly the locked buildings i.e. 92% of all schools, need of wearing ID badges for staff and faculty i.e. 63% of all schools, video observation cameras i.e. 61% and electronic notification systems i.e. 63% of all schools. Larger schools are most likely installing these security measures in order to manage access to grounds during school hours by using metal detectors and security cameras to monitor the students (Anonymous, 2013). Since the year 1999, these security measures have increased to a greater extent.

According to the research of NCES, around 70% of high and middle school students are there who attend their school with security guards whereas in 1999 the percentage of attending school with security guards was 54% (Anonymous, 2013). Around there are one third of all the public schools who attend their school with armed security guards. Studies found related to overall safety measures that more pervasive and severe security practices can become responsible for increased disorder and violence (Anonymous, 2013).

The objective of this research paper is to focus on the security measures that are being taken in the schools and which security measures are required (Anonymous, 2013).
