Scholarly Verses Popular Media Focus on Sexuality Paper
Introduction
The purpose of the study is to explore the topic of human sexuality that is covered in two different sources. The scholarly article chosen for the study is “Substance use, risky sexual behaviors, and their associations in a Chinese sample of senior high school students” by “Shenghui Li, Hong Haung, Gang Xu, Yong Cai, Fengrong Huang and Xiuxia Ye” (Li et.al 2013). The popular article that is chosen to compare is “Efforts to cut risky sexual behavior by U.S. teens stall” by Salimah Ebrahim (Ebrahim, 2012). This will help in contrasting the matter and the way the topic of human sexuality is described. This study will first describe the scholarly article and then the popular article is discussed. Furthermore, both will be analyzed critically deciding which is one is the best approach.

The scholarly article “Substance use, risky sexual behaviors, and their associations in a Chinese sample of senior high school students” is the study about the prevalence sexual behavior and the substance that are used among the population sample of Chinese students of senior high school. This article more specifically talks about the substance used associated with risky sexual behavior and the affiliation of socio-demographic factors that are examined in the population sample.
Some of the studies that were conducted in relevance to this topic highlight the risky behaviors had the characteristic of accumulating one. For instance, the risky sexual behavior including unprotected intercourse or multiple partners for sex that conducts among youth with the drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and the usage of drugs. The violence and substance have enhanced the possibility for the sexual behavior that is risky (Li et.al 2013). Similar researches in the other countries also exhibited high consistency of the substance use in youth or adolescents and risky sexual behavior. The studies also found that adolescents and youth which are sexually active are estimated to be 25% and the half of the sample is newly infected with HIV every year in USA. Thus, the youth and adolescents are crucial part of the population for the sexual related intervention and prevention efforts. The need to conduct study in China is explained as the risky sexual behavior is increasing as the HIV transmission from sexual intercourse has increased. The article then describes the methods and the sample used that is the cross sectional study in ten different high schools was conducted in Shangai. The use of questionnaire helped in collecting the information.
The result is interpreted as the illicit drug and cigarette usage were affiliated with unprotected (without condom) sexual intercourse and sexual intercourse with multiple partner in the relevance of younger age.
The authors conclude by suggesting remedies for the situation that is health education and prevention related to HIV (sexually transmitted infection) is essential specifically among the adolescents that are experiencing sexual intercourse or substance use which will ultimately have the long term beneficial to HIV control in ...
