Introduction

This assignment is undertaken as a mandatory part required for the completion of the module 'Safeguarding Children and Young People'. It will focus on the critical analysis of a particular area pertaining to the safeguard of children and young people. The approach that will be used to facilitate the critical analysis of the area of interest chosen, pertaining to the safeguard of children and young people, is SWOT analysis. Following this approach of SWOT analysis, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the safeguarding agenda pertaining to the area selected from the wider context of safeguarding children and young people, would be evaluated in depth so as to understand the scope of the governmental actions and provisions available in the area more comprehensively, for the purpose of ensuring protection of the current and potential victims. This is imperative to gauge the efficacy of the program which subsequently would be able to derive more effective amendments and modifications to the program, thereby making the program more resourceful through protecting the vulnerable to the highest degree possible.

Discussion

The topic of interest from the wider context of safeguarding agenda pertaining to children and young people; that I have selected to focus upon, is bullying and cyber-bullying of children and young people, and thus the assignment will focus on the critical analysis of the relevant safeguarding measures undertaken to protect children and young people form bullying and cyber-bullying. The issue of bullying and cyber-bullying is continuously rising as a result of which it is of immense importance to address the issue comprehensively, in order to critically analyse the strengths and opportunities so as to balance out the weaknesses and threats through leveraging the strengths and opportunities (Bauman, 2007, pp. 3).

Children and most importantly young people possess the power to change the world but this powerful belief; the strong contender of which is late Princess Diana also, can only be transformed into an attainable vision when children and youngsters are provided with an environment free from violent practices (Li, 2006, pp. 164). It is this fact that can explain the strong commitment depicted by the last two governments of the United Kingdom, towards the issue of safeguarding children and young people from bullying and cyber-bullying (Department for Children, Schools and Families, 2007).

Rise in Cyber bullying can be attributed to the rising prevalence of the cyber world and, as a result of which cyber risks to the children and young people are consistently increasing (Agatston, Kowalski and Limber, 2007, pp. S59). A survey indicates that 71% of the parents are worried about issues pertaining to internet and cyber safety, ranging from privacy and safety risks to cyber bullying along with the unhindered accessibility to harmful and violent content.
