Introduction

Managing and maintaining quality is a complex procedure, particularly in healthcare (Kelly, 2011). However, the Donabedian's structures-process-outcome (S-P-O) model of healthcare quality offers an essential basis for improving the quality of an organization. According to this framework, healthcare quality comprises of components related to organizational characteristics of healthcare provider (structure), the clinical and non-clinical processes involved in care delivery (process), and the effect of care given to an individual and the population (outcome) (Byers & White, 2004, pp201).
