Question: What does it mean to be a Professional Nurse?

The image of the nurse is influenced by the history of nursing. The first orientation to nurses is found in the Old Testament Bible. The word is derived from Latin Nurse that corresponds to the "mother nurse" image associated with a woman accompanying a child who was not his usually as a nanny. Over the centuries the word “nurse” which has evolved to be associated with a person who cares for the sick, not necessarily female.

Nursing has emerged as an intuitive response to the desire to keep people healthy, provide comfort and protection to patients, and the Image of Nurse Folk. The nurse's role was assumed by those women who had desire and ability to take care of. The knowledge that these women developed and accumulated health was passed orally from generation to generation. At that time there was an intimate relationship of religion and folklore with the healing arts.

The image of the nurse is a global concern, in view of the scientific production about theme found in the literature, indicating that for decades the subject is relevant and deserves the attention of professionals. Recent articles have been produced in Australia, China and Egypt, showing that the topic has relevance to study nursing (Fullerton et.al, 1995).

Question: What stereotypes do you believe the public has about nursing and roles nurses play?

The image society has of nurse is pervaded by stereotypes that include figures like saints, prostitutes, witches, heroes and relate to the function of assisting the physician and the lack of social life. Furthermore, the image that nurses have of themselves and their work is negative, causing frustration for the lack of autonomy found in professional reality. For a better understanding of this issue, we carried out a literature review, we aimed to characterize and analyze the image of the nurse. It is little scientific literature on the subject in the country. It is concluded that stereotypes negatively influence practice and the history of nursing are many reasons for existing distortions (Chung, 1998).
