The history of the psychiatric nursing started in the 19th century. The need of the psychiatric nurses has existed since the psychiatric problem is there, but unfortunately the people do no look into at as a mental problem. People at that time perceive the psychiatric problem as an evil and a spiritual problem. However later it's been observed and feels that there is a need of the nursing in the mental hospitals for the psychiatric patients. Then the psychiatric nursing has evolved as proper professional service and institutes has started the diploma and the degrees in the psychiatric nursing. The needs of the new services like psychiatric in the health care arena has created the demand of the new practices in the health care arena.
Roles of the Psychiatric nurse
When it comes to the clinical practices of the psychiatric nursing it can be classified into two levels; advanced level and basic level. The nurses who registered work with the patients, their families, group of people and society to evaluate the mental health requirements, design diagnose, plan, and the implementation of the plans. It is also the responsibility to evaluate those plans and their implementation to check whether the nursing care services are properly served to the people or not. In the clinical practices the basic level nursing responsibilities are to help the patients to improve their mental and physical health and prevent the patients from more disabilities. It is also the responsibility of the basic level nursing to continue monitor the dysfunction. These responsibilities focus on the psychiatric-mental health of the patients, evaluating the patient with self care activities, planning and monitoring the psychobiological treatment schedule, health teaching and the counseling of the clients.
The other level is the advanced level of nursing. The nurses who get additional education and registered in the master's degree and doctoral degree have the opportunity to become the advanced practice nurses. They can also go for the specializations. The advanced level nursing not only look after the basic level but it also evaluate, diagnose, and do the treatment of the psychiatric disorder and potential psychiatric disorder problems. In clinical practices of the advanced nursing they provide the range of core mental health care services to the clients and their families. They perform the functions of the psychotherapist and in some states they can prescribe the medicines to the patients as well.
