Introduction

The hot dog made his first official appearance at the International Fair of 1904. In 1916, Nathan Handwerker opened his first restaurant, "Nathan's Hot Dogs" at Coney Island, mythical place located on the beach in Brooklyn, where New York went for entertainment on weekends early in the century: beach, fairs restaurants, roller coasters, etc.. Seen as a suspect food, because people did not know what it contained, the hot dog has not been very successful in the beginning. Nathan Handwerker has done much to change that. Among its projects the most interesting, Mr. Handwerker paid people to bring the white coat the medical professional and eating hot dogs in front of his restaurant. He launched in 1916 the annual competition of the hot dog place that still has each year on July 4 (national holiday). During this competition, 20 competitors have 12 minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible. Today participants are becoming more professional. They took the title of "athletes" and are members of IFCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating) and participate in other competitions in the United States (Texas red peppers, etc.).. Competitors come from other countries also. The champion for both years is a Japanese, 24 years old and very thin, which, when last competition, ate 50.5 hot dogs. The American was the closest to 26 hot dogs. What is not without problems for a competition regarded both as "American" and "masculine.
