Introduction

“Getting 15 Grand Slam titles is not something you dream about when you are a little boy, but I've had a great career.” These were the words of Roger Federer on his splendid victory at Wimbledon 2009.

According to (Roopanarine, 2012) greatness and eminence of a person is gauged by his achievements in his field. And so, if achievements are the indicators for greatness, then undoubtedly Roger Federer is the best tennis player ever. This can bring about varied views for the reason that some tennis players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have been performing extremely well recently. But again, if accomplishments were to be the major standard, Roger Federer is the greatest who has ever held a racket due to his permanence at the top and the countless number of records broken by him along the way. He is the one who interests me a lot due to his utmost dedication and passion for tennis which is my all time favourite sports.

Discussion

Statistics have proven Roger Federer's commitment and enthusiasm for tennis; for a number of weeks he remained the top tennis player in the world. His strong hold on the top position began in 2004, when he defeated Marat Safin and won the Australian Open title. This victory marked his epoch of supremacy in tennis, winning one title after another. He remained at the top, in spite of the challenges hailing from the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal and Marat Safin. All of these individuals were some of the most outstanding tennis players at that time. However by the end of the year 2008, Federer at last lost the top spot to Rafael Nadal; even so, he was never counted outside the top four. And then eventually Federer turned out to be number 1 yet again in the year 2012 when he won the Wimbledon title by beating Novak Djokovic. On the whole, he has spent two hundred and thirty seven consecutive weeks at the peak which is more than any other tennis player, and an amazing two hundred and eighty nine weeks as the best tennis player in the world.

The Glorious Past

Remaining at the top position specifies that a player is the winner of many considerable titles. Federer won a number of titles together with record-breaking seventeen grand slams. He never looked back after winning the Wimbledon title in the year 2003. On the whole, he has won five US Open titles, four Australian Open titles, one French Open title and seven Wimbledon titles.
